During her unsuccessful Conservative leadership bid in 2022, Suella Braverman called for a suspension of the ‘all-consuming race to net-zero’ in a Daily Express article1
Since then she has continued to make false assertions about net-zero on a number of occasions, most recently in September 2023 after Rishi Sunak announced plans to retreat from a number of green pledges.
She told Radio 4’s Today Programme2 that there was no point in the ‘arbitrary’ target of net-zero by 2050, when actually this was a target strongly recommended in a report by the government’s independent Climate Change Committee.
This report was published in May 2019 after considering all of the available scientific evidence, including the 2018 Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
